Cortez Teachers Are Trained to Support Students With Special Needs

  • Local Champion: Montezuma-Cortez School District RE-1
  • Date Funded: January 31, 2023
  • Grant Amount: $6,500

At the public schools in and around Cortez, many teachers, administrators, and staff haven’t received training in the best practices for students with special needs. And with nearly 17 percent of Cortez students having special needs, that problem is particularly urgent. To address the problem, district administrators brought a potential solution to the LOR Foundation: Hiring a subject matter expert to train teachers and staff on the Individuals with Disabilities and Education Act (IDEA), the federal law protecting students with special needs. With LOR’s help, the school district brought in the subject matter expert and is better supporting its student body.
